Soccer Betting Guide

The popularity of soccer continues to skyrocket across America as increasing numbers of iconic players head to the MLS to strut their stuff. The overall level of quality is at an all-time high and interest is also growing in the leading competitions in Europe and South America. Soccer fans love to bet on MLS, EPL, Champions League, La Liga, Serie A, Liga MX and many more as it can really enhance the thrill of watching a match. Soccer is the world’s biggest sport when it comes to betting and you have a huge range of wagering options to choose from.

What type of bets can I place on soccer?

You can choose from hundreds of different soccer bets, but there are a few key options to familiarize yourself with before you get betting on soccer. The most common is a moneyline wager on the result of a particular game.

You have three options – home win, draw (tie) or away win – and the sportsbooks will assign a different set of odds to each depending on the relative strengths and weaknesses of each team.   For example, let’s say the USA is playing Mexico. You might see the USA as the -110 favorite, the draw priced at +240 and Mexico as the +300 underdog.

A minus sign in a set of odds tells you how much you need to wager in order to generate a $100 profit. A $110 bet at -110 would net you a profit of $100. A plus sign tells you how much profit you would make from a $100 bet. A $100 bet at +300 would earn you a profit of $300. In this hypothetical example, a $10 bet on the USA would net you $9.10, whereas a $10 bet on Mexico would earn you $30, and the larger potential payout on Mexico tells you that it is the underdog.

Within a game, you can also choose from a huge range of prop bets. This is short for proposition bet, and it relates to any market that does not necessarily affect the result of the game. You can bet on who will score first, who will score last or whether a player will score at any time. You can speculate on the winning margin, the exact number of goals and many more options.

You do not have to decide who will win the game if you want to get betting on soccer. If you are unsure, you can wager on the total number of goals, corners or cards, which half will see the most goals, whether a penalty will be scored, whether a penalty will be missed and so on. Both teams to score is a popular bet, as is predicting either over 2.5 total goals or under 2.5 total goals in the game. You can bet on the result at half-time, or which team will be leading at 60 minutes.

There are many ways to earn extra value. If you want to generate a larger potential profit on a team, you can bet on it to win the game to nil, to win the game at half-time and at full-time, or to win the game and a certain number of goals to be scored (e.g. Barcelona to beat Juventus and under 3.5 goals in the game).

You can also give a team a handicap. This is known as spread betting. If you think Philadelphia Union will easily beat Seattle Sounders, you can back Philadelphia -1. It would need to win by two clear goals for you to be paid out, but your winnings will be a lot more handsome if successful. Or you could bet on Seattle +1 or Seattle +2. Or check out Asian handicaps, which allow you to make a half-win or only suffer a half-loss depending on the result.

You can also guess what the final score will be, and you will earn a very nice payout if you predict correctly. The odds on correct score options are often so attractive that you can cover three or four and still make a strong profit if any one of them comes in.   If you are feeling more cautious, you can go for “draw no bet”. That means your stake will be refunded if the game finishes in a draw. You might see odds of +300 on Chicago to beat Atlanta, but odds of +180 on Chicago draw no bet. If you back Chicago draw no bet and it wins, you would not earn such a large profit, but you would be refunded if the game finishes in a draw, and many bettors like that extra insurance. Another option is double chance: you could bet on Chicago to win and the draw at -105 to give yourself an even greater chance of success.

When a game begins, live betting takes over. You can bet on all these options as the game progresses, because the sportsbooks will offer constantly updated odds depending on how the game unfolds.

You can also choose futures betting options on soccer, speculating on which team will win a particular tournament. Popular options include guessing who will win the World Cup, the Premier League, the MLS Cup and so on, or who will finish top scorer in a competition.

Finally, you can combine multiple bets into one wager called a parlay. If you think seven teams will all win on the same weekend, rather than placing seven individual bets you can roll them all into one wager. If one team lets you down, your bet collapses, so it is risky. But if they all prove correct, your winnings will be a lot higher than if you had simply bet on each team individually and you can earn some stratospheric profits through parlay betting on soccer.
