NFL Predictions: Season Review 2019/20

Here’s the Story of 2019/20

The NFL is over for another year, but before you turn your attention to the coming summer sports, you should read this season review. It’s been a vintage year with upsets and surprises occurring every week since September 6.

Let’s take a closer look at the best of the action, the teams that shocked us for one reason or another, and the newly crowned NFL MVP.

Surprise Package of the Season

The Tennessee Titans started the campaign with nobody backing them to make the postseason. Their preseason Super Bowl-winning Moneyline odds of +8000 tells that story on its own. When they made the Wild Card Round with a regular-season record of 9-7, nobody thought they could progress any further. Then something incredible happened.

Facing almost impossible odds against last year’s Super Bowl winners the Patriots, the Titans seized their opportunity for an upset. It was a tight game, and after the first quarter, it looked like business as usual for New England at 7-3.

The Titans managed to take the initiative, and by half time, they were a point ahead at 14-13, but still nobody would have backed them to take the win. It was a flurry in the last quarter of the game, and the Titans scored another 6 points to seal their place in the Divisional Round with one of the shock results of the season.

Next up was an even more significant challenge against one of the favorites to lift the Vince Lombardi trophy, in the form of the Ravens. The Titans took this one in their stride, and Lamar Jackson’s hopes of taking Baltimore to the Super Bowl were left in tatters after three quarters. At 28-6, it was game over, and even though the Ravens clawed back six points before the end, it was too little, too late.

It still ended in tears, but nobody expected them to deliver so much postseason joy to their fans. The Chiefs were far too much for them, and that game ended the Titans’ hitherto successful season with a bump. They lost that game by 35 points to 24, despite leading at half time. It will still go down as a season to remember for the Tennessee Titans.

Biggest Underachievers

The Green Bay Packers take this title despite making it to the postseason and putting in several fantastic performances over the year. Expectations were high as they started their campaign, but when the pressure was on, they crumbled. That trophy still eludes them, and it will now be ten years if they get the chance to lift the coveted trophy named after their most famous ever coach.

The season ended on a five-game winning streak, including a Divisional Round Success over the Seahawks, so this call is based on what could have been. That game made fans believe it was on the cards to take the NFL Championship home this year, after an impressive 28-23 victory. The NFL Conference Championship game was when the fans’ hearts were broken, and it all fell apart for Green Bay.

The Niners had already dominated the Packers once in the regular season, and it was groundhog day as they didn’t show up for this game. It ended 37-20 in favor of the Niners, and Green Bay has to do better next season.

Super Bowl LIV

The Super Bowl was one of the finest and most exciting we’ve ever seen, and the football on display left fans in awe. We covered the Niners and the Chiefs pre-game, and although we called it wrong, we did say that an on-form Patrick Mahomes would make the difference. The Chiefs started as the favorites, but after the first half, it looked like it could go either way.

The Niners managed to keep Mahomes out of the game until the end of the third quarter, too. At that point, it was hard to see the Chiefs coming back into it. They were down by ten points at 20-10, and the Niners just had to see it out. That’s where Kansas has been the most dangerous this postseason.

All it took was one fantastic throw from Mahomes, and they were back in the game. They went on to score 21 points as the Niners collapsed, making history as the only team to come back from double digits down three times in the postseason, and winning the NFL Championship for the first time in 50 years.

2019 NFL MVP

The NFL MVP award went to a player who said he didn’t care who won the Super Bowl after his sides crushing defeat to the Titans. That shouldn’t take the shine off Ravens quarterback, Lamar Jackson’s season, but you can understand his frustration.

Jackson got all 50 of the first-place votes available and deservedly so. He’s only the second unanimous MVP in history after Tom Brady, which is no mean feat. He accumulated 36 passing scores, which is more than anyone else in the NFL this season. He shouldn’t be too downhearted, as next year could well be one of success for Jackson and the Ravens.
