On the Ice: NHL Weekly Roundup

It’s getting easier to see who might end the season with Stanley Cup glory as we move past the quarter season point in the NHL this year. The weekend was action-packed as always, and we have got news on those results, and our view on how that will impact the games to come.

Let’s jump straight into the most significant results and look ahead at what’s coming next for those teams.

Arizona Coyotes 3-4 Edmonton Oilers

The Coyotes failed to make ground on the NHL Pacific leaders, and they stay in the second spot. They led this game until the last period before a slip in concentration allowed the Oilers back into it, forcing the game into overtime. The Coyotes need to pick themselves up fast and get a win in the next game against the Ducks, and we are backing them to do it.

Arizona Coyotes to turn things around against the Anaheim Ducks

The Oilers needed that victory to keep their lead at the top of the standings, and they left it late. It looked like the odds were against them even as they forced the game into overtime. This was the first shootout defeat the Coyotes have suffered all season long. In the end, they managed it, and now they need a much more assured performance in their next appearance against the Avalanche. We can’t decide who will win that one but are edging towards the Oilers to come out on top.

Edmonton Oilers to win again next time out against the Colorado Avalanche

Florida Panthers 2-5 Buffalo Sabres

This was a game full of disappointment for the Panthers as they were outplayed and undone by the better team on the night. It was a chance for the Panthers to pile pressure on the Bruins, above them in the NHL Atlantic, but it now goes down as their second loss in a row. At this point in the NHL season, a 12-7-5 record is still way better than average. There is added  pressure on them to win next time out when they play the Capitals. It’s a tall order, and we are betting on a third straight defeat for Florida.

Another defeat on the cards for the Florida Panthers against the Washington Capitals

This result was not supposed to be on the cards for the Sabres, who are around the middle of the same division. Before the game started, we backed the Panthers to win again, but the Sabres had other ideas as they completed their eleventh successful outing this season. It was effectively a non-contest after they scored four goals in the first two periods, and expectations are also high for the next game against the Lightning. We predict another win for the Sabres in that matchup.

Detroit Red Wings 0-2 Carolina Hurricanes

The season keeps going from bad to worse for the Red Wings, and this was another game they barely showed up for. They never looked like getting anything out of this one,  capitulating to the Hurricanes to lose their sixth in a row. Detroit is now rock bottom of the NHL Atlantic, and we can’t see that changing meaningfully this season. Next up is a game they could win against the Maple Leafs, but we aren’t touching it.

Yet another loss in store for Detroit Red Wings against Toronto Maple Leafs

San Jose Sharks 2-1 New York Islanders

This on was the surprise of the round thanks to the Sharks, and the Islanders have to go home and lick their wounds before coming back to fight again. It was the second win in two games for the Sharks, and that makes their season look better than it has been. Can they complete another impressive victory in the next game when they play the Kings? We’re having a cheeky punt on them doing just that.

San Jose Sharks set for another win against Los Angeles Kings

It’s time for the Islanders to take stock and try to put this blip behind them. Their general performance has been far better than this, and they are still in contention for the Stanley Cup, despite not winning against the Sharks here. It should be business as usual next time out against the Kings, and we are on them to win that matchup.
