University of Alabama Fires Baseball Coach Amid Sports Wagering Probe

The University of Alabama has fired baseball coach Brad Bohannon after regulators launched an investigation into suspicious betting on his team.

Sources said that a sportsbook surveillance video captured a bettor communicating with Bohannon when placing wagers on Alabama’s game against LSU last week.

He allegedly made two bets on the Tigers beating Alabama – a straight bet and a parlay featuring a Tigers win as one of the legs. LSU did indeed win the game.

“Alabama director of athletics Greg Byrne announced he has initiated the termination process for head baseball coach Brad Bohannon for, among other things, violating the standards, duties, and responsibilities expected of University employees,” said Alabama University in a statement.

“Bohannon has been relieved of all duties and [pitching coach] Jason Jackson will serve as the interim head coach. There will be no further comment at this time pending an ongoing review.”

Regulators across the country instructed sportsbooks to stop taking bets on Crimson Tide games. The Ohio Casino Control Commission, New York State Gaming Commission, New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement and Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board were among those to respond to the investigation.

“As a matter of precaution, the Gaming Control Board today advised that wagering on Alabama men’s baseball is not permitted in Pennsylvania until further notice,” said the Pennsylvania regulator.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey added: “There must be zero tolerance for activity that puts into question the integrity of competition.”
